Security and legal

What happens when someone signs, in plain words.

Is it legally binding?

Yes, for most business documents. Docnature signatures are electronic signatures under the US ESIGN Act and UETA, and simple electronic signatures under EU eIDAS. Some documents, such as wills and certain court filings, still need wet ink or a notary in many places.

What we record

Each signer gets a private link by email. Before signing they agree to use electronic records. We record when the document was sent, opened and signed, with each signer's IP address and device. All of it goes on an audit certificate attached to the end of the signed PDF.

Tamper check

We take a SHA-256 fingerprint of the original file and of the final signed file. Anyone can drop a signed PDF on our check page. The file is fingerprinted in your browser and never uploaded. If even one character changed, the check fails.

Your data

Documents are stored privately and are only reachable by your team, the signers' private links, and share links you create. Passwords are hashed with scrypt. Sessions use secure, HTTP-only cookies. Anyone can turn on two-step sign-in with an authenticator app, and Docnature staff must use it.

How we count paper saved

Pages in the document × number of signers, plus one copy for the sender. An 8-page lease signed by 2 people saves 8 × 2 + 8 = 24 sheets.

We only count sheets. We don't claim trees, carbon or CO₂, because we can't measure those honestly.
